Glasgow 1770 Release No. 1 - Triple Distilled

The Glasgow Distillery Company was founded in 2014 and can be found about 1.5 kilometers to the west of the city center. It takes its name from the old Glasgow Distillery that was operational near Dundashill from 1770 until the early 20th Century. While their single malt was maturing, they created cashflow by releasing sourced malts under the Prometheus banner as well as produce the Makar Gin, G52 Vodka, Banditti Club Rum and Malt Riot Blended Malt. But now their own Glasgow 1770 Single Malt is ready. The first release is triple distilled.

The nose is pleasant on fruit and wood, translating into apple pastry, vanilla ice cream, mandarin from a can, pineapple juice and candied orange peel. The spices on duty are nutmeg and cloves, with a tad of aniseed and cinnamon. After some air, I also get some rye bread, white chocolate with praline filling and gingerbread. Give it a full ten minutes in the glass and it will suddenly turn quite candy-like, like gummi cherries. This is very pleasant.

It is a lot more spicy on the palate than the nose announced, but that is no surprise. It was matured on virgin oak after all. That delivers quite a bit of nutmeg, cloves and cinnamon. The fruit is lead by oranges, but is soon joined by baked apples and some peach. There is also a floral note, but not disturbing in the least. Clearly young, but no problem there either.

The finish is relatively short, but remains spicy and warming without drying the mouth.

A nice and feisty little aperitif style dram. Reminds me in many ways of the Auchentoshan Virgin Oak from a few years back.
