Every time I pour a Glen Scotia, I cross my fingers. For me this is often hit or miss. The quality of what I have tasted so far has varied enormously and I have had more bad than good Glen Scotia. So I was very curious about this release for Cask Aid, the Belgian bottler that donates a part of the proceeds to charity. It’s a single oloroso sherry cask at cask strength that appeared early 2019.

The nose is an interesting mix of peat, dark fruit and rust. Bitter oranges, fresh figs, some sponge cake with raisins and acacia honey and… a drop of blood. And yes, this is an awesome nose.

Oh, it’s a whole other malt on the palate… ship’s rope, brackish water, diesel oil with some pineapple and bitter orange marmalade in the background. This is not for snowflakes, but it certainly works! For a moment I feared it would become completely salty, but the sherry cask quickly put it back to a sweet middle. Good balance, by the way, and perfectly quaffable without water.

The finish is the strongest part! Wonderfully long an tar, oranges and peat, with the spiciness of ginger at the death.

And Glen Scotia thus climbs a few spots in my list. This was 125 EUR well spent. Thanks for the tip, Eric!
