We just tried the Glen Scotia 1991 ‘Strawberry Ganache’ by Wemyss and put that head-to-head with this Glen Scotia 1991 ‘Merchant’s Mahogany’s Chest’, which was bottled a year later. The similarities might seem self-explanatory, were it not for the differences.
Again an active sherry cask, but quite some nuances here. Less fruit, but more leather and furniture polish. Then a clear hint of rum raisins and some orangettes (with dark chocolate, mind you). Tobacco completes the picture. Then some forest scents like rotting wood (which sounds afwul, but smells great in this glass). After a few minutes a truckload of fudge kicks in. Nice.
It is less oily than its nephew, but tastes better. A little dirty, if you know what I mean. The raisins return, as do the oranges and chocolate. A feisty pepper comes along. I like it.
The finish is long on tobacco and pepper.
They are clearly family, but each have their own character. I prefer this one.
