Specialty Drinks Ltd, the bottler behind the British The Whisky Exchange, released a couple of bottlings in 2009 to celebrate the first ten years of the webshop. One of those was this 31 Year Old Glenglassaugh from 1978. It matured on a refill sherry hogshead.

The nose firstly reminds me of a good rum, with some eucalyptus and menthol in the mix. Dry sherry notes of raisins, prunes, dades and blackberries. Then some citrus kicks in. Orangettes. A bit of roast beef. Finally also some polished leather and cigar box. Grand and intense.

On the palate, it is well seasoned (cinnamon, nutmeg, liquorice) and very sweet. A lot of dark fruit, but primarily oranges again. Maybe even some pink grapefruit. Hints of espresso. Nice oak, too. Toasted. Again a bit rum-like. Which is not a point of criticism, by the way.

In the lovely warm and long, but very drying finish, the espresso and oranges stay in the spotlight.

Amazing sherried Glenglassaugh from days gone by. Wow!
