Earlier this year independent bottler Cooper’s Choice launched a single cask Glenglassaugh with no age statement, but with the resounding name ‘Port Bomb’. I guess it’s fair to assume that the influence of the port cask finish will be significant.

It certainly is on the nose. I get a very candy-like nose on strawberry marmalade in combination with a truckload of Werther’s Original. But the scent of molded wood dominates and to be honest I am not yet sure I like this or not.

The body is fine and the ABV excellent. It gives this malt the punch it needs and is far from watery. On the one hand I get raisins and raspberries, drenched in maple syrup, on the other hand I get a salty element and lots of wood. Some peppermint and cloves, liquorice and pepper. Becomes sweeter from the second sip forward. The port is well integrated, without overpowering the malt. This is more like, although I’m still not entirely convinced.

Quite some spices appear in the finish, as does oak, while the sweetness turns to aspartame. That is not a good thing.

Boy, this is tough. It’s not bad, but I cannot convince myself to really like it. As the Dutch say, I’m in dubio.
