Bushu-Nakagawa Station is the name of a Japanese trainstation connecting Hanyu and Mitsumineguchi. While this Golden Horse blend is often connected with Hanyu, it has nothing to do with the distillery of the same name. This blend is marketed by Toa Shuzo, but they do not have their own distillery. It is a so-called NDP, non-distilling producer. Insiders say it’s bulk whisky from Scotland. You are probably aware that the Japanese rules are such that whisky from all over the world may be imported and then bottled as Japanese whisky. Very grainy and honeysweet nose on vanilla, barley sugar, qunce, gooseberries and young apples. Hint of Sprite, the world famous soda. Does not have any character to speak of. No good. Pity. Mildly oily body, but very flat on the palate. Sprite, vanilla, touch of oak and white fruit. Hint of white chocolate. Barely any spices. Lemon becomes the leading, because only fruit. How boring. Medium long and somewhat spicy finish. Come on! This stuff gives Japanese whisky a bad name (let alone the fact that this is not Japanese whisky at all). Those 50 EUR are (much) better spent elsewhere. I quickly pour myself a glass of Sprite to rinse the mouth.
