During our visit to the Filliers distillery in December 2011, Fernand Daquin allowed us a dram of what is now, it would seem, bottled: the Goldlys finished in an oloroso sherry cask.
The nose reminds me of a rye whiskey, which should come as nor surprise. Some dried fruit (raisins and dades) and candied sugar. But also something that reminds me of carton.
It is sweet and creamy on the palate, starts off juicy but then dries quickly. Again loads of rye. If I had tried this blind, I would have confused it for an American whiskey. Spicy on nutmeg and cloves. Hints of coffee.
The finish is more of the same, but does allow the fruit the final word.
Goldlys is a nice middle-of-the-road whisky, without being extraordinary. But the American brothers do better, I feel. Just over 40 EUR.
