Most of us know the Irish pot still Green Spot (as well as the Yellow Spot), but now Green Spot released a whiskey that was finished on wine casks from the Château Léoville Barton. This is a wine domain in Bordeaux in the village Saint-Julien. The Léoville Barton wines are dominated by the cabernet grape. I wonder what that will do to this pot still whiskey.
The nose is dry and buttery at the same time. Weird, but pleasant enough. Sweet grain cookies go hand in hand with crème brûlée, a hint of baby breath (not an offnote!) and a touch of tannins. Smells a bit like an empty glass of red wine the next day.
The palate is nicely balanced between sweet and, well, winey. There is a bitter touch of the cask which works to the whiskey’s advantage in this case. All sweetness of caramel now. The second sip adds a nice dose of cooked fruit. Think strawberry and peach, but also some squashed banana.
The finish is medium long on the same.
The first sip did not rock my boat, but it grew on me. Nice balance for sure. Between 50 and 60 EUR.
