Having trouble deciding on a blend.

I am in the process of drinking down my stock, because I am moving in a couple months, BUT, I want to get a nice blend for my summer drinking enjoyment before I move.

I am down to either Hibiki 12 or Compass Box Asyla. I haven't tasted either, but I have had a lot of Compass Box expressions, and I have never heard anything but good comments on the Hibiki. I have tasted the Yamazaki 12, but other than that, this will be my first venture into Japanese Whisky.

I know the two are probably very different, but I just can't decide, so I thought I'd throw it out to Connosr and see what people had to say.

Thanks,

OCeallaigh

I really enjoy a few selections from Compass Box, but the Asyla failed to make an impression. Not bad, just not memorable. The Hibiki 12 on the other hand... I am really liking this whisky. It is sweet, soft, and has this odd hard to describe taste lingering about on the edges...over-ripe plums maybe. I'll have to pour a glass tonight and check.

Hibiki... definitely! The 12 yo is a very decent dram. Personally I would consider the Hibiki 12, 17 and 21 to be among some of the best Japanese whiskies out there.

I can only recommend the Compass Box Asyla it is the only one of the two listed that I've had. As @Onibubba says not bad just not memorable. However in my case I thought it was good and pleasant enough to get more for my cabinet. However I have to travel to Chicago to get it, and it's good but not that good. Hope this was helpful. :)

Hibiki 12 is pound for pound one of the best blends you can find, Japanese or not. Very nice variety of fruit aromas you can pull out of this as well as some delicate smoke. Two things to wet your whistle with: first, one of the whiskies is finished in plum liquor casks, a drink popular in Japan; secondly, another whisky in that blend is filtered through charred bamboo. Pretty dang interesting if you ask me. Post your thoughts!

I really like the Compass Box Great King Street Artists' Blend. Reasonable price and very single malty.

When in doubt, though, and tight for cash flow, JW Black is always good and reliable.

@OCeallaigh. I'm sure I could round up a few volunteers to help you drink down your stock. Enjoy brother.

I have not tried Compass Box Asyla, but I had a few drams of the Hibiki 12 at a little tasting a few weeks back and it was very good!

In my honest opinion, the blended / vatted Malt "Big Peat" takes the cake! In fact, I consider it at the top of the many vatted Malt expressions: Where else can you get to sup on Port Ellen without proffering an 'arm and a leg', so to speak!

This really is a magnificent 'drop'! And it is affordable!
