On the label of this 'Island Malt' a Viking helmet and axe are printed and the name is High Parkland. Say no more. This was bottled by Dramfool in honor of the Köpenicker Whisky Fest and sits at 61.9% ABV! It first spent 14 years on a bourbon hogshead and then got another 2 year finish on a Coal Ila – excuse me, Cola Ali – oloroso sherry cask. Special! It starts with quite a bit of Werther's Original, heather and honey, but is soon supplemented with very earthy notes and maritime touches. Stone fruit and peat, a nice combination. But in all honesty, I have the greatest difficulty in recognizing an Orkney malt in this. Nevertheless, I find this smell wonderful, albeit very powerful at the same time. The sweet notes come first on the palate, but then immediately have to make way for a hellish maritime kick with a big drop of brackish water and an equally large pinch of pepper. This is a kick to your teeth. Licorice and apricot jam, oyster juice and cloves... It goes up and down like a yo-yo and has some trouble finding its balance. But... again... it's nice. And water? Forget it. It doesn't need it. The finish is long, sweet versus salty, peppered and slightly drying. And very nice! Highland Park, Caol Ila, Oloroso Sherry... it shouldn't get any crazier. It's delicious!
