Distribution of ratings for this: brand user

The reviewed bottle, 1998 13 YO Inchgower Gordon & MacPhail Connoisseur's Choice series, was aged in a refill Sherry butt. The reviewed bottle was sampled when the bottle was newly opened and then 8 days later. The flavours did not change noticeably in that period of time

Nose: delicate dilute lemon zest, understated very mild medium-pitched malt, a hint of rosewater; slight, yet pretty. If this nose were stronger in intensity, it would be worth 24/25 points

Taste: very different from the nose; wine and malt, a little blurry, as thought this newly opened bottle had been open for 2 years. The palate does not show the refinement of the nose; citrus is still the main theme

Finish: finishes sweet and sour on low-pitched wine residue, with the flavours mushed together

Balance: reasonable balance. The pretty, delicate, and floral nose is the highlight; the palate and finish are brutish by comparison

I heard G&M were known for their cask choices and did great indie bottlings. But with my Mortlach experience and these reviews of yours, I'm getting the impression I should be very wary of them.

Thank you for sharing these tasting notes, @Victor. Inchgower has always been one of the elusive sort to me. While I quite like the 14yo bottling from the F&F series, none of the other versions sampled scored highly with me. Sadly, this G&M bottling seems to fit this pattern.

@Nozinan, @Pierre_W, we read reviews mostly, I would say, because we only sometimes get the chance to taste the whiskies for ourselves, before we buy them.

This bottle is one my sister bought for herself, after she had tasted it. While I was surprised that she has been indulging lately in buying mild malt whiskies because of her previous rather rambunctious taste, she does tend to like anything with noticeable citrus.

@Victor

If she likes the whisky I'm not one to tell her she's wrong. Far from it. Its just that from these two reviews it sounds like G&M wasn't choosing the kind of wood that I would want to see maturing my whisky, that's all.
