Interesting article. Thanks for sharing. I doubt any CEOs of Multinational Spirits conglomerates will listen though. Boom and bust seems inevitable. Of course with markets in Asia still growing, I think the bust is a long way off. From a personal standpoint, I don’t collect; I buy whisky to drink and share. I’m fine with others doing what they want. I knew this wasn’t a cheap hobby when I got into it. I like to think I’m not so attached to any one whisky that I can stop buying it if the price gets too ridiculous for me...although time will tell.

@OdysseusUnbound Sounds like you don't suffer from FORO, or, too much from FOMO.
I'm in the enviable position that I don't need to buy anymore whisky in order to have enough to last me for a very long time (if not a lifetime). I could probably last through several Boom/Bust cycles. But on the other hand I do get attached to some expressions and want to bunker them (as I have said before, I have enough for a lifetime but not enough of each whisky for a lifetime...).
FOMO and to some extent FORO keep me buying, but also, when I go to tastings I want to have something to offer that is as good or unique as what everyone else has to offer.

@Nozinan I do suffer from FOMO every now and then, but I try my best to be rational with varying levels of success. FORO? Never. I'm actually not that picky. I'd be fine sipping a whisky I rate 75/100 or higher. Sure, I prefer the really good stuff but mediocre whisky in great company is better than drinking great whisky by myself. Of course, it doesn't have to be one or the other...
Edit: I just noticed my local LCBO has a bunch of OWA 107. And while I've literally just stated I don't suffer from FORO, I'm seriously considering running over there and getting two more bottles (in addition to the two I've ordered online and the two I've bunkered) to bring my total up to six. Like I said, I try to be rational.

Nice find @Wierdo. It's an apt comparison but, bar a few distilleries (which we could probably all reel off here on this site), I doubt the industry will pay it any heed.
I've become quite stoic about pricing and other such shenanigans of late anyways. My buying will be very minimal going forwards, unless my situation changes, and I know exactly where I will be putting my pennies . . .

@Nozinan I don't particularly get bitten by FOMO. When a popular distillery releases some limited expression I know there will be a clamour and prices will get silly so I don't even bother.
FORO is a different beast though. I am bitten by that a bit. That's why I have a fairly healthy stock of Springbank at the moment and will probably try to grab a bottle or two of Benromach 10/100 before it all goes.

I often buy (or don't buy) whisky based on FORO... Fear Of getting Ripped Off.

I often buy multiple bottles of particularly good offerings based on FOPI (fear of price increase).

@BlueNote actually FOPI or FOBD (fear of being discontinued) probably would be a a closer description of what drives me to stock up on favourites.

I would think that FOTIABM (fear of turning into a birdman) is the greatest factor preventing me from purchasing THE Macallan at this time.

@Nozinan It’s not FOBAIS (fear of becoming an insufferable snob) preventing you from purchasing THE Macallan?
It’s unfortunate that Edrington chose to go the “premiumization” route with that particular distillery. I have tasted some nice stuff from them (and some mediocre stuff, along side some embarrassingly bad stuff). I’m fairly sure a certain doctor was even kind enough to provide me with a sample of their 12 year Sherry Cask single malt.

@Wierdo Oh, yeah, FOBD, that's another big motivator and the reason I have three Old Pulteney 17s in the bunker.

@OdysseusUnbound Dalmore is another one I avoid because of FOBACDALARP (Fear of becoming a complete dickhead a la Richard Paterson).

@Nozinan One of these days I'm going to show up in Ford Nation with a bottle of JW Red and some clean gonch and crash one of your little whisky soirees and see if you guys are having as much fun as it looks like you are.

@BlueNote, let me save you the trouble...don't bother bringing the Johnnie Red; we've got far worst stuff than that ;)
You are guaranteed to have sore ribs from laughing and you will undoubtedly be scratched from the Liver Donor List.

@paddockjudge I don't know about that. I once assessed a guy as a donor who drank half a bottle of Wiser's a day (he did not say which type).
THAT wasn't the reason he was disqualified...

I bet the housekeepers at Whyte and Mackay hate Richard Patterson.
'We've had a bit of a spillage in the tasting room can you come and clean it up please'
'I've just cleaned in there. Has that bell-end Richard Patterson been showing off again throwing whisky on the floor'
'Errrr....maybe'
