I'm looking at buying an ultra premium whisky. So far, I am eyeing a bottle of Jameson Rarest Vintage Reserve 2009, or, a Bowmore 25 (recent) release. Keep in mind that I am understand their differences, etc. Which one should I get?

Well… Rarest Vintage is a delicious whiskey, but for the price, I would probably go with the Bowmore. You can get delicious, easy drinking whiskies for much cheaper. If I were going to drop a large chunk of change on a special bottle I would rather something with a little more uniqueness and boldness of flavours. However, if you are looking for gentle and easy going, the Jameson is fantastic. Win win.

Thanks OCeallaigh for your insight. I think my allure to Jameson's Rarest Vintage is due to exactly that, the rarity of finding a bottle in my neck of the woods. I have heard and read so much about this bottling. It is highly rated, and to me, easy drinking is a nice change to the cask strength scotches that I have been enjoying. In regards to uniqueness, I just got a bottle of Bruichladdich PC9 (VERY full of flavour). The Jameson's bottle is approximately $100 cheaper than the Bowmore. I know that they are comparable in certain markets. What the hell, I think I am going to splurge and get the Jameson bottle. Like you said, it's a win win situation either way! Thanks again!

You can try the Bowmore at some LCBO...I did, and I wasn't overly impressed, at least not for the money they wanted.
