Is it possible to ruin whisky by...

Hi all, I have a feeling I may be worrying far too much about the taste of my scotch, but I was wondering- if a bottle is left in a chilled place for too long- for example, a day in a cold car trunk- could that affect the whisky's flavor? Thanks.

(As a disclaimer, I usually drink neat.) If it's actually possible to lessen the flavor of scotch by ever chilling it, I'll take care not to again!

@squidboy007 I don't know the chemist's answer to your question. I can only share my experience. When we pick up whisky in town (50 miles away) I leave it in the back of the truck while we finish running errands. The groceries have to go inside the truck 'cause they won't survive the -30 F (-34C) ride home in the dead of winter.

As promised on many bottles of 46% non chill filtered whisky, it turns cloudy as can be, but I've never noticed any ill effect on the nose or palate. Just think of Shackleton's whisky (Mackinlay's Rare Old Highland Malt) sitting in Antarctica's ice for more than 100 years--didn't seem to have hurt it either.

@two-bit-cowboy Thanks for the reply, wow! That's quite a trek you make. Your answer came as a relief, as I have left the Bunnahabhain I just bought in my car for some time.

@Squidboy007 I wouldn't worry about letting your whisky get cold as I've never heard of any damage to anyone having their whisky stored too cold. As Two-bit Cowboy already mentioned think Shackleton's whisky.

However letting it get too hot/too much light shock can damage any spirit/wine/beer so try not to leave it in an area that gets too hot or too much sunshine.

@SquidgyAsh thank you brother squid, it's stored in a dark mild location as is preferred by the whisky gods, amen.

As was mentioned, it may be cloudy at lower proof but that won't affect the taste. Heat and sunlight are the enemy of whiskey.

@Bourbondork clearly whisky is simple bottled vampire blood.
