Viking Line from Finland is a ferry service in Scandinavia. They often offer exclusive single casks on their ships. This is one of those: a Kilchoman 5 Year Old 2007 single sherry cask.
The peat smoke is unmistakable, yet the nose is dominated by the sherry cask. I get very sweet notes of candied sugar and farmer’s butter. Mokatine and origin chocolate shavings over Columbian coffee. Green hers (parsley, thyme) and some sea salt. A less pleasant note of play-doh threatens to ruin the day, but that does not happen.
The arrival is very sturdy, with the emphasis on the spices (nutmeg, ginger, chili pepper and cinnamon) and a bit, salty smokiness. The dark and sweet notes struggle to shine through this. Nevertheless, this is very pleasant. Some mint and chewing tobacco kick in. Salted caramel and charcoal.
The finish, however, lifts this malt to higher regions. Wonderfully long, warm, bittersweet and a bit umami. Grand.
The nose is the very opposite of the taste. Sweet versus salt. Very nice, though. But the finish is absolutely stunning.
