I tried the first release of the Kilchoman Loch Gorm at a tasting led by James Wills in May 2013. This is the second edition, that appeard this year and matured on oloroso sherry casks. It is only 5 years old and surprisingly pale.
It is immediately very salty and smoky on the nose, with loads of spices and a trace of asphalt. But the sherry cask has done its job as well. I get some tobacco and leather, some nuts, oranges and mint. Becomes sweeter as I leave it to breath. It pays to give it some time.
I get the same, in the same order, on the palate. First the smoke and salt – very assertive peat – before the sweetness takes over. Caramel, tobacco, leather, chocolate, sultanas and even some banana. Nice balance. The spices slowly but surely turn this from oily into dry.
That is also reflected in the long, smoky and spicy dry finish, that turns sweet once more for a short period at the death.
What a balance! For such a young beast, I mean. Yes, I am fond of this one. Thanks, Patrick.
