Kilkerran 8 Cask Strength

The 8 CS is now in at Masters of Malt for anyone that's interested - they tend to get snapped up quickly.

I'm curious but can't take the plunge in good conscience so close to Xmas.

(I don't work for MoM by the way and if this is an inappropriate post I apologise)

Never inappropriate to let fellow malt-mates know of a hard to get malt that's available...

This is kinda weird. Kilkerran 8 years old, where would that be in the wip outings? I've got the wip 7 which i believe is 11yrs old since it was the last expression before Kilkerran 12yrs

Chronologically, the 8 CS is the latest Kilkerran OB. It came out after the 12 YO.

But as far as maturity goes, it would be equivalent to WIP #4. (WIP #1 was 5 years old, so each WIP's age was its "number" plus 4.)

And as far as its flavor profile goes, it's supposed to be somewhat similar to the popular WIP #7 Bourbon Cask Strength. Although it's significantly younger, the ABV and the barreling are similar.

@RianC, they're on batch 2 now, by the way. I haven't been hunting them in person, but I have been following the online chatter. They're not labeled with batch numbers, though. Instead, you have to check the ABV, rather like the Springbank 12 CS batches.

No word yet on differences between the first two batches.

Our state monopoly surprisingly received a small allocation of Kilkerran 8 this week 55.7%ABV ( not certain which batch this makes it) 92.75$ CAN, sold out quick but I wasn't too heartbroken, first because i'm trying to slow my purchases down and second because I have not heard many favorable reviews about it. I would prefer to get a 12 anyhow since I know I enjoyed that quite a bit.

@cricklewood I agree, the 12 is a beauty. I’m guessing the CS 8 is a real brute requiring serious water to make it drinkable, but, as I say, just guessing.

@BlueNote I've heard mixed reports -some love it's brute strength, while others prefer the 12 due to it's better balance. I'm yet to buy the 8 CS - although I'm planning on picking up another WIP 7 Bourbon Wood CS I spotted on a shelf locally :) The 8 CS can wait

I, personally, prefer the 12.

I liked the first batch of the 8 better than the second. Serge has a review recently of one of the batches.
