- Brand: Kurayoshi
- ABV: 43%
While Matsui Distillery has a whole range of whisky under the labels of Kurayoshi and Tottori, this is not Japanese whisky! Regulations allows producers to source their whisky anywhere in the world and bottle it in Japan and then put a Japanese label on it and sell the whisky as Japanese. Imagine that. Impossible in Europe. Kurayoshi is nothing more than Scotch that was finished in warehouses in Tottoir, where Matsui has a distillery that created sake and shochu.
The nose offers freshly baked bread, some mint and typical sherrynotes like raisins and almond cake. Reminds me somewhat of a Speysider like Balvenie. Very soft and accessible.
Unfortunately the mouthfeel is very weak, almost watery. At first I get a lot of oranges and apricot pastry, then some earl grey tea and rosewater. Unfortunately also a lot of tannins, creating a very bitter note.
The finish is medium long, warming and focused on oranges.
Far from great and devoid of any Japanese trait, but enjoyable at least.
