This new Ledaig (the peaty whisky from Tobermory on the island Mull), released in 2015, is a limited edition and fully matured on sherry casks. I discovered it at the whisky festival in Ghent. By the way: did you know that the distillery was in fact originally named Ledaig? It is the name of the fisherman’s quarter where she was built. But let us move on.

The nose is quite schizophrenic. On the one hand I get smoke, rubber, sour milk and even some tar, but on the other hand I get nice fruity notes from apricots and dades, as well as raisins and candied oranges. Initially it did not really move me, but it kept getting better. It grows on you.

Nicely oily on the palate. Now the sweet notes of the sherry cask come first: oranges, coffee, tobacco and even some red fruit. Then the peat takes over. Big development of smoke and loads of spices like pepper, nutmeg and salt. Midpalate it even becomes quite brackish.

The finish is long and warming, a tad smoky with loads of liquorice.

This was truly good. An adventure. Around 125 EUR. I would be willing to pay that. I do believe Ledaig is an underestimated malt.
