Very interesting site. I'd say that they are "legit" in the sense that they do not make wild promises ("There is no magic formula to what we do. We don’t have a warehouse full of old forgotten whisky, we don’t have a secret recipe or DNA analysis and we don’t have plans to reopen any of these lost distilleries. The answer to what we do lies in the history books…) and also the 3 distilleries chosen to date (Stratheden, Auchnagie and Gerston) are hardly the names that I would choose to scam with.

I never thought it was a scam, but the term "lost distillery" can easily be used to attract whiskylovers and amateurs. It's like putting "Legend" on the label of bottle Bowmore, it doesn't mean it's a legendary malt, it's just a name. The same applies here: what they are basically doing is vatting existing malt whiskies, based on an analysis of what the whisky would have tasted like. And I must admit, I loved reading their research on the history of these lost distilleries. But than again, I'm a bit sceptic about recreating a single malt's flavour by blending others together. And that's still no guarantee for a good product. What I'm missing on their site is some actual info on their product, not just the distillery's history, some tasting notes would have been nice. It would have been a great idea to get a microdistillery involved and put their research on the watersource, ingredients, etc. to good use by actually making some single malt. But that would probably be a far too risky and inefficient operation

I went to my second Lost Distillery tasting last night. The Stratheden, Auchnagie and Gerston whiskies are all good. I've got a bottle of the first two sitting on my shelf, and an order in for the Gerston.

Hello to all! I'm loving the discussion on our whiskies, and thought I'd add to the debate a little. We are not seeking to copy or to recreate what was made back in the 19th century - that would be wrong on every level!! We could say however...that if these distilleries were still producing today...based on our research, our whisky represents what they might be making today. In other words, its a modern interpretation. Hope this helps!

Only just found out about this company, they are trying to revive long lost brands by trying to recreate the original taste. I must say that I'm a little sceptic, as it sounds a little too good to be true. But than again, it sounds pretty damn interesting and it aught my attention. Has anyone tried one of their whiskies yet? Opinions? Is it a honest attempt to create a new"old" whisky or are they just trying to cash in on the good name of lost distilleries? www.lost-distillery.com thedrinksbusiness.com/2013/06/…
