Hello, I have just noticed a clearance sale at the NLC , (Newfoundland liquor corporation) the Macallan fine oak 21 is listed at $267 per bottle. It was reduced down from $350. The same bottle in the LCBO in Ontario is $499. I am tempted to purchase but I have not heard favorable reviews of the Macallan 21. I have the fine oak 15, its ok but I find Macallans overpriced. Any experiences or thoughts on the Macallan fine oak 21? I may just stay with the Lagavulin 16 ($100) and Laphroaig 18 ($150) for the same price. I think I just talked myself into the Laphroaig and Lagavulin rather than the Macallan.

Cheers

@cclward -I totally agree with you, the Macallans are overpriced. For about the same price as mac 21 you can have a bottle of HP25 - that is a little bit of heaven.

The Macallan is way overpriced, and their Fine Oak should really be called "we don't have any good Sherry Casks left for you, so here is some fine oak, whatever that might mean". If you want some excellent sherry cask whisky at reasonable prices, go for Glenfarclas (which also is one of the few remaining family (independent) distilleries.

What @olivier said, plus...8 times out of 10 I will go with two bottles that I KNOW that I like over one bottle I suspect of being overpriced...

The Macallan will always be pricier for its age; it's marketed as one of the premium distilleries. It hasn't gotten quite to the point of Dalmorization, but it's not lagging far behind. I agree with @Olivier regarding The Macallan's use of non-sherry casks. The sherry is consistently very good, but you can often find sherried whiskies, older, and certainly better, for far less money. I've noticed that The Macallan sherry tends to go more toward red fruit at first, which puts it more into the same park (in my experience) as Aberlour and Glendronach. The Macallan also uses Golden Promise barley, which can yield, allegedly, richer and more oily whisky, but it's rather lost in The Macallan due to filtration and dilution. There was a rather significant price increase on The Macallan in the last year or so that seemed rather egregious.

I totally agree with all of the gentle men's comments.....Macallans is over priced and over hyped....the 21 yo Fine Oak is priced at $500 in Ontario. Ridiculous!
