Macduff is a rather young distillery, founded only in 1962. It was purpose-built to produce malt for the ever rising demand for blends at the time. William Lawson’s is one of their biggest customers. But they obviously also release single malt, under the name The Deveron (previously Glen Deveron). I have quite a young malt in my glass, bottled by the Dutch company van Wees in their well-known The Ultimate series.
Very fresh nose on young apples and juicy oranges, but also a surprising note of English licorice candy. A touch floral and relatively light, if you know what I mean.
Light body, fresh taste. Again apples and oranges, but with a soft note of caramel. Good continuation of the nose, but in all honesty a rather easy malt.
The finish is medium long and relatively feisty on white pepper and a soft bitterness from the oak.
A bit of an everyone’s friend malt, very accessible, but little exciting. Nothing wrong with that, of course. Thanks, Benny.
