Besides their classic single casks at cask strength, Malts of Scotland also bottles the very accessible (both pricewise and drinking strength wise) Glen Class range, their so-called Steady Crackers. The Glen First Class and Glen Peat Class were joined by the Glen Speyside Class and Glen Grain Class in 2011, but now there is also this Glen Highland Class. A whisky from 1999 with a beautiful bronze colour.
The nose is very aromatic with loads of sherry influences. Dark fruit, not dry but juicy. Rum-raisins and dark berries. A lot of nuts as well, walnuts in the lead. Coffee liqueur, gingerbread, almond paste, Christmas cake.
Oily and very spicy on the attack. Cloves, nutmeg and black peppers. Then the fruits and nuts kick in, before the coffee and oak deliver a little bitterness. Nice continuation of the nose. Powerful whisky.
The finish is long, very long. And wonderfully sweet.
The Glen Speyside Class was mostly sweet, this one is mostly spicy. Only 45 EUR, which seems very fair.
