When I look at the color of this Mannochmore, I am immediately reminded of the infamous Loch Dhu whisky from the same distillery. But luckily that’s where the comparison ends, for this is quite different – read: better – stuff. In the meantime the malt has spent as long in the bottle than it ever did on the active sherry cask.

While I do get plums, cherries and strawberries on the nose from the get-go, it is actually dominated by big notes of acetone, shoe polish and wood glue, but contrary to what you might think it actually works just fine. Parsley and almonds in the background. Very special, but very entertaining nose.

The palate is just as much fun! Plums, cherries and strawberries, sure, but again a funky layer of soy sauce, herbal liqueur, cedar wood, cloves, cinnamon, gingerbread and ginger. Very spicy. The wood does not disturb in the least. I offers lots of spices that makes this malt very amusing.

The finish is nicely long on ginger and liquorice and offers a slight bitterness that I can quite appreciate, albeit on the edge of being astringent.

Well, that was a fun tasting session, although I don’t think I’d want a full bottle of this. Just a tad to exuberant for that. Thanks, Manny, for this party!
