Soldiers Rock is a well-known rock on Islay at the Oa peninsula coast in the south. So most likely this is a southern coast malt. Ardbeg, Laphroaig or Lagavulin. But of course we cannot be sure. And to be honest, it is not that important either. Let us just taste.
Wonderful nose on loads of caramel, candied dark fruit (dades in the lead) and a beautiful smokiness. Some rust as well, which is not an off-note! Engine oil. Dusty attic. Orange rind. A twig of mint. This is very good indeed!
Good body, nicely prickly on the palate with lots of earthy notes. There is, however, an immediate drying effect. My saliva glands go into overdrive. Loads of smoke, but also green tea, tannins and chewing tobacco. Beef jerky. Hint of smoked fish. But it remains mostly sweet. Some vanilla, loads of caramel and sweet fruit (now mostly citrus).
The finish is long, smoky, spicy and warm. But oh, so drying!
Grand nose, good palate and fine finish. Most likely a sherry cask. First I need a glass of water, now! Around 80 EUR.
