I've got quite the backlog of samples, including mystery samples, but I've been negligent as of late. If only a friend would take the time to send me some text message reminders, I'd probably get to these sooner. (That's a joke)

The following sample was graciously provided by @Nozinan It was poured on July 10/22, and the bottle was opened May 23/22. It was 80% full when the sample was poured. The sample was tasted from a Highland whisky glass.

Tasting notes

  • Nose (undiluted): upon first opening there's an alcohol nip that makes me think this is a Canadian whisky. However, with a few minutes rest those notes dissipate and I'm thinking malt whisky. There's caramel, some red fruit, a touch of balsamic vinegar. There may be some baking spices but I can't be sure.
  • Palate (undiluted): It's fairly rich on arrival but it's definitely a high strength offering. There's caramel at first and the red fruit comes back though I can't quite place it; raspberries maybe?. With time there are oak tannins popping in to say hello.
  • Finish: long and warming, the fruit hanging around, perhaps some baking spices and oak lingering.

With water

  • Nose: the fruitiness gets pushed back and the oak comes forward quite a bit. The caramel and slight vanilla notes are hanging around as well.
  • Palate: this initially seems hotter with added water. That makes no sense at all! But then I'm a history and philosophy teacher, not a chemistry teacher. The oak almost dominates here but the fruit is still hanging around for good measure.
  • Finish: baking spices, a touch of almonds perhaps, and a slight spirit-bitterness at the tail end which makes me think this is a young(ish) or NAS whisky.

Closing thoughts

This whisky was significantly more enjoyable undiluted. While the higher strength was apparent from the first sip, it wasn't harsh or unpleasant at all. In fact, this was quite drinkable at 59.5%. My guesses have almost gotten better. I guessed that the bottled strength was somewhere between 58%-60% abv. My initial guess was Macallan CS or Amrut (the latter being because I know how fond @Nozinan is of the Indian distillery). When I was told those were both incorrect, I guessed M&H, again because I know my benefactor has quite a few of their whiskies in his well-curated spirit library. I was right on the distillery (the third time) and I was glad to learn I wasn't imagining the fruit notes. Not that I've ever had pomegranate wine, but I feel like I was in the right ballpark. I enjoyed this whisky and if the price was right, I'd probably buy a bottle. Thanks again to @Nozinan for his generosity.
