This is one of a bunch of whisky miniatures I picked up in a mix and match 4 for $10 display. I knew nothing of this before and there isn't much online. From what I know the distillery is in Alberta and they use Western Canadian prairie grains.
According to a review I read on the Rum Howler, the spirit is aged 3 years and then filtered clear. It appears it is meant to be mild-tasting.
the bottle claims that it is "Unmistakably the finest soft sipping whisky you will taste anywhere". It boasts of "a mild floral aroma and hints of licorice, anisette, vanilla and honey". Let's see:
Nose 5/25
Almost imperceptible. Smells a bit like vodka. Maybe something savoury. Not bad, just not there.
Taste 15/25
Thin, spirity. Sweet. Slightly fruity. A little black licorice.
Finish 21/25
Quite long. Pleasant. I get the taste of Sen-Sen.
Balance 10/25
Underpowered. This does not really taste like (in my not so humble opinion) whisky.
Total Score: 51/100
This is NOT a sipping whisky. I don't know what makes them boast that is is the finest sipping whisky.
I would go further and say that this isn't much of a mixing whisky either. It is too underpowered to add anything to a mixed drink.
Now let's be clear. It's no Lambertus. It is not offensive in any way. But it really has no flavour. The only use for this that I can see is for people to add to their drinks in order to get the effects of the alcohol, which is kind of the opposite of the way I approach spirits.
It sounds like it was fortunate that this "lucky dip" whisky was only a mini ha ha. It sounds as if they filtered out all the flavour along with the colour. Thanks for taking one for the team there!
