- Brand: Mortlach
- ABV: 58.2%
Look, Mortlach is the kind of malt that I will always try and if it has this fantastic color – thanks to the finish on a sherry casks – then I am unstoppable. The Beast of Dufftown, bottled at a hefty ABV in one of those lovely decanters from the Signatory Cask Strength Collection. Life is good.
The typical umami scent is completely absent on the nose! I get mostly relatively candy-like notes from red lace candy and mokatine and some menthol. Even some iodine on the nose. Did not see that coming at all and makes this Mortlach atypical to say the least. That notwithstanding, I quite like this.
Surprisingly soft on the palate. Again very candy-like with some menthol and English licorice candy, chewing tobacco and cough bonbons. Green garden herbs, chili pepper, wine vinegar, red candy. What is going on here? But good.
The finish is definitely long, but holds the middle between sweet and spicy and is softly drying at the death.
What a weird, but very pleasant and lovely Mortlach. Thanks, Marcel.
