Navazos Palazzi Cask Strength Grain Whisky, July 2014 Palo Cortado Single Cask, 53.5%

Nose: Yes. This reminds me a little of the Compass Box Hedonism that I had a few years ago, only richer, darker, and deeper... and perhaps just a bit more hedonistic. Grain-caramel (not 'grainy,' no, like a bad apple), dark rum cake with chocolate flecks. Decadent. The sherry is obvious, but not as dominant as it was in the malt. Toffee, cinnamon, cream, and baking spices. Subtle red berries and lingonberries, some oxidized character. Liquid dessert.

Palate: Lots of things all at once. Some bitter grain along with sticky toffee and caramel syrup. Buttery, too. A very rich grain base. More oxidized sherry, nutty, pecans, and a bit of fruit essence, much the same as in the malt. Strawberries, more red fruit, and jams,

Finish: Perhaps a hair simpler than the malt version, but it's far richer. Decadent, I must say. Some of it is the actual heavy weight of the mouthfeel. That's how I'd view this. The grain might have been great on its own, but with the sherry, it turned into something special. (A-)
