Gosh, yes, since I just opened a bottle of batch 8, I thought it would be nice to immediately put batch 9 next to it. Same composition as always (65% STR red wine barrels and 35% ex-bourbon casks) and again cut to 46%. I expect the difference to be very small.
Well, now, what have we here? This one is a lot more creamy than all the previous batches I've been allowed to try. Vanilla and caramel precede soft notes of citrus fruit and sweet chestnuts. Very herbal nose, in fact. Ferns and eucalyptus. Surprisingly different from previous batches, which I find very interesting.
Oily on the palate, but at the same time surprisingly fresh and lively. Eucalyptus now comes first, followed by vanilla and soft notes of bergamot and lime. This is followed by a light touch of nuts and white pepper. Licorice. Tannin. This is a completely different critter than the previously batches I already tasted, which only makes it more fun.
Long, spicy finish – another surprise. What fun!
An outsider, though. The classic Nc'nean is a sippin' whisky, but this one is a lot more captivating. There's a lot going on here. It is therefore immediately my favorite batch.
