Need your help for special Christmas gift!

My husband loves his scotch!! His favorite is the Talisker 10, it is the only bottle so far that he has bought over and over again. For Christmas this year I want to buy him 1 or 2 bottles of different scotches.

The only bottle so far he has not liked was the Bowmore 12, which he said was too smoky for him.

Any suggestions for a Talisker 10 lover? I was looking at Ardbeg 10 but think it will be too smoky. Perhaps some Laphroaig 10 or Quarter cask... then again I know nothing of scotch but of what I read of the reviews and what I have tasted on my own.

Thanks in advance, I am feeling a little lost with all the different kinds and really want to buy him something he will enjoy. I am in Canada, so alot are not available here, but all suggestions are greatly appreciated!

You might want to try the Laddie Ten by Bruichladdich. It has a subtle smoke, that I would say is comparable to Talisker. Amrut Fusion is also a great bottle you may want to look into. Highland Park 12 is also always a great option.

If he likes Talisker 10, you could get him Talisker 18. I'm sure he would love it.

Hope that helps as a jumping off point.

If the Bowmore 12 was too smokey, then the Ardbeg and Laphroaig are right out. By 'in Canada', do you mean Ontario (LCBO) or a different province...Highland Park 12 or 15 would be good - less smoke than the Talisker and also partly sherry matured. I'd also be tempted to recommend pretty much anything by Compass Box if you can find it, or Springbank 10.

As OCeallaigh already pointed out - the Bruichladdich Laddie 10 yr might do the trick...A few others that you may wish to consider would be Highland Park 12 yr, Clynelish 14 yr, or the Oban 14 yr.

A budget option to consider is Té Bheag, it's a blend with a good dose of Talisker inside. It's $37 at the LCBO, so maybe consider that and a more expensive single malt. Bruichladdich 10 as everyone has been saying is a great choice.

Vatted Malt -The Peat Monster is smoky but smooth.

I agree with @OCeallaigh that the laddie 10 might be a good choice, and definitely Amrut Fusion. Affordable and delicious.

Thank you so much!! The Laddie aint available anywhere near Montreal, but I have marked the Springbankv10, Highland Park 12, Oban and I want to check that mixed bottle with Talisker in it.

I'll second the suggestion of the Talisker 18 - it's like a much more mature and refined Talisker 10. If we're to stay in Talisker territory, the Distiller's Edition is also worth a taste. It's basically a 10 year old, which has been put into sherry casks for a couple of months.

Of course, we could go in a completely different direction - Glendronach 15 Revival and Aberlour A'Bunadh are two beautifully sherried malts, but quite unlike Talisker. I'm also a huge fan of Bruichladdich, so if you do manage to track down a worthy expression of that, I'll recommend it.

I hope you can find something great in the area, and that you'll have a very happy Christmas!

I second the Highland Patk recommendation...the 10, 12, and 18 are all great. I'd add Springbank 12 Cask Strength or the 15. Longrow, Caol Ila 12 or Distillers Edition,

Talisker 57N is great too, but in most of our great country it's either unavailable or absurdly priced.

@cpstecroix Yes I was going to buy the Talisker 57 N in Ottawa over the weekend but at 175$ i was a little hesitant!!

Next time in Ottawa I will pick up the Laddie for sire!

Catalina, I have seen Caol Ila 12 mentioned here BUT if your hubby doesn't like Bowmore 12y then I would not recommend Caol Ila 12 - the smoke in those is at least as prominent (Even though I personallty find the Bowmore 12 equally smoky as the Talisker 10, but tastes vary of course:-) The HP 15 or 18 however would be excellent options!

If he loves the Talisker 10 then others I'd recommend:

Talisker 18, Talisker Distillers Edition, Caol Ila 18 & Distillers Edition, Oban 14, Cragganmore Distillers Edition

I think a Springbank is the best recommendation for a lover of Talisker who doesn't want full-blown peat smoke.

My favorite Springbank in the 12 YO cask strength.

He would definitely enjoy the Talisker DE or Talisker 18yr. However, I would probably try and go in a slightly different direction to open some new doors. Something like a Oban 14yr or a Highland Park 15yr. Or you could totally forgo the smoke and try and tackle a Aberlour A'bunadh but do some research on the Batch Nos. I currently have a bottle of Batch No.42 and it's fantastic.

I would also add the Balvenie 14 Caribbean Cask to the list. Delicious!
