New Knob Creek

Did you like the old Knob Creek 9yo at 100 Proof?

I am trying to figure out the recipe. They say a portion of their straight bourbon (must be a minimum of 4 years in virgin oak barrles). Is rested in quarter casks. The resting period according to one article is 4 years. So now we have a straight bourbon at about 8 year of age. And then that is married with more straight bourbon (between 4 and 8 years of age). And then that is sold for $50.

Sound a lot like Laphroaig Quarter cask. Probably a lot of vanilla notes. I would be interested in a taste.

But I would probably stick with the Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve with an age statement of 9 years and 120 proof for $43.99 in my area. I am a big fan. Others are not. But then I am a high proof whore. If you like the old Knob Creek 9yo at 100 proof (which I did not) you might very well want to try it.

I don't see the point. Of course, I am still interested in tasting it.

Beam must have seen the success their stablemate (Laphroaig) is enjoying with their Quarter Cask expression. I’d be willing to give it a go.

@Nock I really enjoy the 9yo single barrel at 120 proof. the standard 100 proof is meh. but like others have mentioned I really enjoy the Laphroig quarter cask so maybe its just a psycology trick that my brain now relates quarter cask with good stuff.

@casualtorture, there are so many, so, so many new releases, I can't keep up. I would certainly give this a try.

@casualtorture I’ve liked the 9 year 100 proof more than the 9 Year Single Barrel. I haven’t tried the NAS 100 Proof. Maybe my bottle of SiB came from a sub-par Barrel.

@Victor I’m a Beam fan (Jim Beam Bonded is surprisingly good) so I’m sure I’ll take another shot at Knob Creek Single Barrel.

@OdysseusUnbound good man. I've been unlucky a number of times in that 300+ bottles I've bought:

1) Lagavulin 16

2) Talisker 10

3) standard Buffalo Trace

4) standard Elijah Craig 12 yo

5) Ardbeg Corryvreckan, twice, @Nock's official 2 worst batches he has tried

6) Ardbeg Uigeadail, once, out of four batches, the A Tale of Two Uigeadails bottle # 2

7) W. L. Weller 12 yo (you know this drill)

8) standard Knob Creek Bourbon (a mini), why I've never bought a full-sized bottle of this

9) Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban, for the first 11 months, bad before it became good

10) Aberfeldy 12, for what seemed like forever

11) Baby Saz Sazerac Rye, first bottle

12) Eagle Rare 10 yo, first 18 months, and

...a multitude of very crappy Scottish sulphured malt whiskies.

You can always get an off bottle.

@OdysseusUnbound I would say I am mostly NOT a Jim Beam fan. I don't like the white or black label. I don't like Baker's, or Booker's, or Basil Hayden's and I am totally underwhelmed by the old Knob Creek 9yo 100 proof. The only one I found that I really liked was the Knob Creek 120 Proof. I keep Old Grand Dad 114 around also, but I don't like it as much as the 120. And boy have I liked it. I think I have bought about 7 standard bottles and 5 store picks over the years. All have been far better than any Baker's or Booker's I have tried. I don't think I have had a bad one yet. Granted, I haven't tasted a Booker's over 7 years old . . . so that might be part of my problem. BUT that is me and my taste. And I know many people prefer Booker's. So if you palate doesn't match up with mine then totally disregard my two cents.
