In the heart of Broorklyn, just a bridge away from Manhattan, you can find the New York Distilling Company, where no less than 5 different spirits are produced: Dorothy Parker American Gin, Perry's Tot Navy Strength Gin, Mister Katz' Rock & Rye, Chief Gowanus New Netherland Gin and the one I am going to try today. This is the Ragtime Rye, named after the swinging, syncopic music of the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th Century. I was told (by the owners, so I’m sure it’s right) that the mashbill contains 72% rye. The remainder is 16% corn and 12% barley. It matured on American oak for 3,5 years.

The nose is surprisingly dry and very spicy – that is the rye, of course – and shows only a bit of fruitiness. I am thinking cherries, mostly. Some clear honey, a touch of pepper and a lot of oak. You can almost smell the staves of the cask.

It is silky soft on the palate, with some caramel and cherries again – very clear, now – as well as some oranges, before the peper and nutmeg take the reins. The wood is still very prominent, as if licking a plank. But... it works.

You can call this a long finish, sublte and drying with a lingering spiciness.

Very nice and easily quaffable rye whiskey, that remains soft despite the wood.
