North British is a grain distillery near the Scottish capital of Edinburgh, founded in 1885. The single grain we are trying today was distilled in 1997 and bottled at the age of 12 by Signatory.

The nose is light and reminds me of vodka, with some vanilla, sweet corn and a touch of oak. Rather grainy with barely any depth. Leave it for a while and it will become weak and dull.

It tastes bittersweet, grainy and basically... not much is going on. Only a touch of spices keeps you from nodding off.

The finish, which is medium in length, is simply a fading of the palate, as if someone is turning down the volume of the music. And then you do fall asleep, so to speak.

It may be a bit unfair, because you can hardly expect a grain whisky that is meant for blending to have a lot going for it, right? But then, if you bottle a single grain as such, then I believe the bottler felt it was interesting enough to do so. I beg to differ. Sleep well.
