This is the most recent bottling of the Oban Distillers Edition, distilled in 2006 and bottled in 2020 after a second maturation on a Montilla sherry cask. I am putting it head-to-head with the release from last year. Elegant nose on yellow and very ripe fruit. Think peach, mirabelles, cherries and banana. Lots of raisons as well, with the drop of honey. The classic, maritime character of the malt shines through, but the nose of this one enjoys mostly sweet notes. A soft touch of nutmeg and some tobacco give it weight. I quite like this. It is nicely full flavored. Oily and softly seasoned. Think again nutmeg, but also some cloves. Very early on the fruit appears (sweet notes but also something sweet and sour like grapefruit), but is soon joined by woodsmoke, green garden herbs and mint. Yes, you may call this complex indeed. The spices and fruit gently fade away into the middle long finish, but the fresh mint lingers. Frankly, Oban has never disappointed me and probably never will.
