Old Fashioned Anyone

Hello Chaps, Chapettes and anyone else who doesn't want to confine themselves to those categories.

I have a developed a recent penchant for the classic whisky cocktail the Old Fashioned, perhaps the oldest cocktail there is. My question is what is the perfect whisky/bourbon/rye..... to have in said drink. Now obviously the spirit has to be quality and I think it needs to be good enough to drink neat (or with water/ice ...) so that the mixers add to the spirit as opposed to masking it. However, I think it needs to be cheap enough that you wouldn't mind mixing it.

So what in your minds would provide the happy medium?

Blanton's makes a tasty Old Fashioned but I sometimes use Pikesville (also good in a Whiskey Sour – my other go-to whiskey cocktail).

Bitter Truth make excellent bitters the-bitter-truth.com I can recommend their 'Jerry Thomas Own Decanter' Bitters and the Orange Bitters.

@Volks, the Manhattan is my favorite classic drink.

2 oz Smooth Ambler Old Scout Rye 95.5 proof. Bulleit 95 Rye will work almost as well. 1 oz Sweet Vermouth. 3 drops of bitters. Shaken over ice and served in Martini glass.

Fantastic

Forgot the most important part. Cherry with 1/4 teaspoon juice from the jar.

Yes please! I always look for a high rye content in the Bourbon, but preferably just any Rye Whisky. I think the Wild Turkey Rye is a nice example with its 65% Rye content; and It's no back breaker either:) But its a perfect cocktail to endlessly experiment with different spirits, bitters and sugars/syrups. I recently had one with Mezcal, Jamaican Jerk Chicken bitters, chipotle syrup and a bacon strip. Also be sure to try maple syrup in stead of the water/sugar solution in the classic OF.
