It’s a public secret that I have a weak spot for new make. Timon – former employee of The Nectar, Belgian importer of Paul John – made me very happy when he offered me a sample of new make from the John Distilleries in far off India. No less than 64% ABV! Where is my water?

Lovely nose! Very clean new make that already shows a sour fruity note. The typical scent of cooked vegetables is shown the back door. On the foreground I get a surprising touch of white chocolate. Quite herbal as well. Some stable scent as well as something metallic, but without disturbing.

Yes, it scorches! Stand fast, you can do it! Without any off-notes, I now get sweetness that reminds me of dark, purple candy. Some white rum! Sweet! Surprisingly sweet. And very clean.

It lingers very long in the mouth and dies a feisty, spicy death.

Lovely new make. No wonder Paul John single malt is such a beauty. It all starts with this beautiful embryonic whisky. And then good wood and patience. Thanks, Timon!
