Peat and Port

Peatpete started a discussion

After being an Islay, and in particular an Ardbeg afficcionado for pretty much as long as I have been drinking scotch, I recently purchased a bottle of the Ballechin Port Cask matured. Last night I did some head to head tastings of my collection, and realised that the Ballechin is now my favourite whisky, and by a fair margin. I have a bottle of BenRiach 15 year old Solstice bought and waiting for me at my liquor store next time I manage to get south, but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for other good (or even just realy interesting) Peat and Port expressions.

Lagavulin 16 is a great peated whisky also I really enjoyed the Ardbeg Airigh Nam Beist. As for port I would suggest Balvenie 21 port wood, I have read some great reviews on this particular single malt but have not opened mine up yet to experience all the hype. Hope this helped

@T4sho3 Thanks for that, but what I am actualy looking for is for peated whisky that is finished in port pipes, as opposed to advice on both peated, and seperatly on port finished. Altho the Balvenie sounds like it would be grea to get hold of!

I've only tried a few and not been that keen so far - I missed out on the Solstice at Whisky Live this year but heard it was rather good. The two I did try there were Bowmores, until recently maybe my favourite Islay but I've started going off them: 21yr old Bowmore Port cask (pricy and a bit on the flowery air freshener side for my liking) and 16yr old Bowmore Port Matured (pulled pork, mustard and a hint of the flowers. Pretty good, but try and get a taste first).

The latter is definitely worth a look, but as I tasted the former at a collectible whiskies tasting I'm suspecting it's probably shooting up in price...

Bowmore do a port finish called Dawn though I've not tried it. I've had a couple of great bottles which were single cask bottlings from independant bottlers like the Creative Whisky Company 1996 Laphroaig 12 Year Old Port Finish . But have you tried any red wine finishes? I've had a great Caol Ila 12 yr old red wine finish from the Old Malt Cask and and Bowmore 16 Year Old 1992 Wine Matured.

@JonMarriage So far I have not tried any wine finished expressions. You find that they are similar to the port finishes?

@Peatpete Yes, maybe not as sweet. I think it adds a darker, richer note to a peaty whisky
