Port Ellen is extremely popular with malt-lovers around the world and Islay aficionados in particular. While the stocks diminish (do they really? I've been reading this for years and still an amazing number of bottles are released every year - thank the Maker!), quite a few independent bottlers seems to have a great number of casks to put on the market. Today we're trying a single cask, bottled by Waddel Hepburn from Glasgow for the Milano Whisky Festival 2009.

On the nose is the obligate duel between peat and citrus, but a wonderful touch of vanilla makes it creamy and soft. After a few minutes, it's the citrus (grapefruit, lime and lemon) and some ripe melon (Melo Cantalupensis) that dominates the nose.

Despite the high ABV, this PE is dangerously drinkable. The attack is peppery with quite a bit of peat and seaweed and a big chunk of sea salt on top. Yes, almost brackish! With Port Ellen, that's a plus! But apart from that, it's also very fruity with citrus and melon.

The finish lingers and doesn't show a trace of wood, despite the age. Wonderful.

This Port Ellen, distilled in the year of closure, is very typical and thus absolutely no surprise. But who wants to be surprised when you can have such a party on the palate?
