Queen Margot is a brand that you can find at supermarket Lidl. It is what we call bottom shelf stuff of which the contents is kept secret. The distillery obviously does not want to be associated with the discount chain, whilst still happily selling them their product. By the way, their 8 year old won a gold medal at a blind tasting in June 2014. Which means it might not be bottom shelf stuff after all?
The nose is rather closed. It needs quite some hand warmth and patience. Then I get loads of vanilla and fudge. The nose is not bad, but absolutely not entertaining. It reminds me more of a white rum than whisky. After a few moments, I also get some white chocolate and some banana. I am sure this contains quite a bit of grain whisky.
The arrival is rather watery. Immediately honeysweet with loads of caramel. Oak too. The tannins are quite loud. Some oranges and toffee shine through. The banana returns.
The finish is not worth mentioning.
If you can find a bottle, you will pay the round sum of… 8 EUR. Bottom shelf stuff it is. Queen Margot was in fact the woman forced to marry King Henry IV of France, only to be locked up in a castle by her brother. Thought I would add this little tidbit to make this tasting note worth your time after all. Thanks, Pat, for the sample.
