I just came back from Italy where i had my first experience with independent bottles. My friend/business partner surprised me with couple of drams of Samaroli bottled Ardbeg from 1976. It was absolutely astonishing, but he told me its taste is only surpassed by its steep price. I was thinking on starting the "independent bottle voyage", but certainly not with bottles like that.
So i was thinking have you guys had any experience with independent bottlers and what are the recommended ones? I know it's hit and miss when it comes to IBs, and they are rarely reviewed so it kind of adds to the plight of purchasing them. I was checking them online and i like that most of them are both non-chill filtered and with no added coloring. So does anyone have any recommendations in the sub-100$ category?
I don't really go to independents for low prices, but MacKillop's has recently put out a lot of under 100 Euros bottles of cask strenght and excellent quality. As always, Gordon and MacPhail is most of the time excellent and at prices that are acceptable.
The Italian indies, I agree, are outlandishly expensive, in particular for the 40-46% abv's from Samaroli and Silver Seal that are sold at cask-strenght prices.
