Ah, the debate around Sinterklaas and Zwarte Piet (and especially the latter of course), is still soaring. I don't understand that. For me, that's a children's party. In 2021, the Dutch bottler van Wees, who we mainly know from the malts in The Ultimate series, launched this Saint & Peat, which is actually a heavily peated Bunnahabhain. Let's taste it! Nicely greasy nose on nettles, soil, garden herbs, oyster juice and smoked mackerel. A single yellow apple should bring some counterweight to this rather light nose. And yes, the peat is prominent, which means that we are talking about the so-called Staoisha of Bunna, named after the water source of this Islay distillery. It is also nice and oily on the tongue. But now it's surprisingly sweet with apples, vanilla and icing sugar, while the peat gives it a sweet and sour touch. The smoke development is special. Loads of peat with some fish oil and pork on the spit. Citrus and apples take the lead, while the peat provides a lot of heat. The finish is perfectly in line with the taste and takes a particularly long time. Saint Nicolas, come in with your servant and share this dram with me! At the time less than 40 EUR, which was an absolute steal. Thanks, Pat!
