Les Grand Alambics is a whisky shop in Chambéry, France (about 40km north of Grenoble and halfway between Lyon and the Swiss border). With the regularity of the clock they bottle something exclusively for the shop (and that can also be rum, gin or another spirit). In their so-called Bird Series – with birds on the label – they released this Secret Highland in 2020, of which it is an open secret that it concerns Clynelish.

Hmmm... The nose does not immediately confirm this. This is light on citrus fruits and apples, a bit yeasty and shows little waxiness. It's in there, but completely in the background. A hint of mint, some melon and something of freshly cut grass. Soft spiciness of the oak. Nivea cream! In all honesty, I find the nose not very pronounced.

Stop the press! On the palate, it is immediately obvious. Tiger balm, white fruit, lime peels, young oak, effervescent tablet and a cartload of malt sugars. Hint of soot in the background. Midpalate a good dose of pepper appears. A bit playful on the tongue. Comes across as younger than it actually is.

You feel that especially in the finish, which turns out to be a bit alcoholic. Citrus and apples again, with some pepper on the deathbed.

Well, just a good, young Clynelish, but no more than that. Thanks for the sample, Tobi.
