Asta Morris is at it again and has prepared a few new releases for us (although it took him long enough, I was aware of this upcoming bottling since November last year). Ah, the good ol’ Scots, eh? There’s just no rushing them. Anyway, this Secret Speyside is very, very pale.

Fresh and fruity, lively nose on banana, mint, chamomile, lemongrass, witlof (that’s a first!) and Haribo bear candy. What a lovely, candy-like nose. But it can hide it’s age well. If nosed blind I would have thought this to be much younger.

On the palate, it turns somewhat bittersweet, with a lot of grapefruit and gooseberries, soft vanilla, some white pepper and grape pith. Lovely sourness as well. Soft note of woodsmoke and again some mint that gives it a fresh lift. Again very playful and alive.

The finish is medium long and evolves from sour to bitter to sweet (nope, it never turns umami) and makes me smile.

Again Crazy Bert knows how to surprise. Lovely spring whisky that is more layered that you would think at first. You need to sip two drams before you can completely understand it. Who am I to argue with that? And while 185 EUR is not cheap, this is a whisky of 28 years old. The distillery? I haven’t a clue. Bert’s only response was his trademark smirk. Typical.
