Hi guys, after getting a little acquaintance with peaty malts i'd like to try the sherry ones, so do you think Dalmore 12 can be a good intro? i read good reviews also about the balvenie double wood...

@lucadanna1985, you're a lucky one: there are many sherry casked whiskies out there to try! I haven't tried the Dalmore 12 yet (though an unopened bottle awaits), but the GlenDronach 15 year-old Revival might be a good start for you. Of course, you could also go BIG and try either the Macallan Cask Strength or, my personal favourite, the Aberlour A'bunadh. You'll find very positive reviews of both these whiskies on Connosr.

@lucadanna1985 I have tasted a few Sherry finished whiskies. I have a bottle of the Dalmore 12, and it is decent, but there are others I would rate higher. In the inexpensive category, I like Aberlour 12: really fine nose and interesting coffee notes on the finish. I would like to compare it to the 10. If you can find it, the Springbank 15 is wonderful stuff: very buttery. The new Glenmorangie Sonnalta PX is fantastic with a wonderful balance of flavors. I have tasted the Balvenie Doublewood several times and like Jim Murray I've never really been able to get into it; it is just too bland for my tastes. I have not found very many sherry finished Islays that I thought were good, the exception being Ardbeg's Uigeadail and Corryvreckan.

@Hogshead I have not tasted the 12, but the 17 is fantastically smooth and clean, very well-mannered. (I'm hoping to do a 3-way review of Glenfarclas 12, 15, and 17).

i haven't had the dalmore. but i have had the balvenies. and i agree with paulrpotts and jim murray on the doublewood. it was quite woody, if i remember correctly, and lacking any pizazz. the limited edition sherryoak 17yr was much better i thought. more rounded and the sherry hints were very nice. of course, if you've got the big bucks though, the 30 yr old is tops.

GlenDronach 15y Revival is a great sherry whisky and have become one of my favorites. I have not had the Dalmore yet but it sure is on my wishlist.

From what I have gleaned and experienced, there are many sherry-finished or double-casked malts, but not many that are exclusively sherry matured. As others have mentioned, most of the former are good, but my bottles are still full and getting dusty. For exclusive sherry, I still anticipate getting my hands on some Glenfarclas and Glendronach, but for now one of my favorites is the ubiquitous Macallan 12, which is exclusively sherry matured.

@lucadanna1985, regarding Dalmore 12, I believe that it is a sherry finish, but it is one of my bottles that is getting dusty. One of my favorite sherry-finished malts is Glenmorangie Lasanta, which is half gone already. My other favorite sherry-influenced malt is Highland Park 12; this one is all but gone, and could be a candidate for the one bottle on the deserted island :-)

@lucadanna1985 and @dbk : I have to agree with dbk, I first picked my MacAllan Cask Strength because I tried the 18 yo Macallan Sherry cask and loved it but the price was too steep for me! I really liked the cask strength (don't hesitate to dilute it a tiny bit more than the usual dram...). After reading reviews on the A'bunadh, I had to give it a try and oh my god...! this has become my favorite dram I think! I tried the Dalmore 12 once and liked it but I thought it was a bit bland compared to other sherry finished. I realized that i tend to like the stronger abv scotch, so I would understand that some people find these two a bit too powerful... My advice: give the Aberlour A'bunadh a try, today if you can!
