It sounds to me like the key to this story was realizing that the shipping (at cost X) saved you from checking a bag (at cost XXX). Nice work.

Looking online, the prices seem a lot higher than the BC run stores, and with 4 bottles you could save more than the cost of checking luggage, depending what you want...

@Nozinan Cost may be higher, but it's hard for me to compare because the stuff I was buying is stuff I simply cannot get locally (rural area). And shipping was pretty cheap--especially when spread over more bottles.
I did do some research, though. One thing I checked on was the price of Michter spirits. Legacy has the full line (well, four different bottles), and I was interested. However, the cost was about double what I'd pay in the US, even allowing for the current dollar (approaching 3X at par), so I'll wait until my next weekend trip to Spokane.
As OIJas noted, the main point here is that, now I know I can ship whisky--which begs the question, how come the BCLDB won't ? On more than one occasion, I've asked the local BCLDB store to bring in a bottle for me--and while they have done so once, on several other occasions they refused (or, as they put it, were unable to do so, even though it was available at another branch).

Recently, my wife and I travelled to Vancouver for a quick weekend visit. Time was tight, so we flew down (one hour flight vs a whole day of driving). While we were there, I visited Legacy Liquor, which purports to have the largest whisky selection in BC. I was hoping to pick up a couple of bottles--ones I can't find locally--and stuff 'em in my bag for the trip home.
At the store, I discovered that I could have my purchases shipped directly to me. This changed things a LOT. For one, I could travel home--as I had going down--without checking any bags. And, I could buy more than 2 bottles if I wanted. I decided to give it a try.
(Understand here, I had always assumed that shipping whisky was illegal, for whatever reason. My favourite whisky retailer, KWM in Calgary, cannot ship across the provincial border, and the gov't run BCLDB won't ship individual orders period (they will sometimes ship store to store, but then again they often won't.)
Anyway, I arranged--with some hassle--to purchase and ship 4 bottles to my home address. Took a week, but I received them yesterday, all in good condition. Everything was double-wrapped in bubble wrap and fairly well packaged. It's my first time doing this, but I may try it again (it'll be a while, though--I have lots of whisky here I haven't opened, and I have to decide if I'm going to collect the stuff or drink it, and I don't drink it very quickly).
As far as Legacy, the store: well, it ain't KWM, that's for sure. At KWM, there is a taster in the back for most any bottle on the wall--try before you buy, imagine that! Here in BC, though, the regs state that any opened sample must be destroyed within 24 hours of opening (or so one guy at Legacy informed me), so... Also, the sales guy I was speaking with at Legacy just didn't seem quite as knowledgeable as some of the folks I've met at KWM, but I really can't hold that against them--hey, everyone has different tastes. But, the end result is that I'm more cautious when shopping at Legacy.
Anyone else purchase there?
