I tasted the Greenore 8Yo 2 years ago in Toronto. Very good product by the reviews. I found it quite good since it is single grain (better than most Canadian Whiskies in my opinion) but would not buy a bottle.

Yes. I love grain:)
I've had some very good SMWS bottlings and everything I've tried from Clan Denny and Scott's Selection so far has been excellent and worryingly well priced (40 year old whisky for under £100? Yes please).
However, as a start into the grain world I'd recommend Compass Box Hedonism - it's a blended grain rather than a single, but it shows off the sort of flavours you get in the younger but still well-aged whiskies.

I've tried a couple of Carsebridges. One was a 35yo from the SMWS which was disappointing. The other was a 46yo and part of the Sirius range. It was amazing, quite simply one of the best whiskies I've tried, and that was alongside a 1966 Fettercairn and a 1967 Dalmore. Mind you, it wasn't quite as keenly priced as cowfish mentioned, it's a mere £1000 per bottle.... caskstrength.blogspot.co.uk/search

I would love to add a grain whisky to my collection at some point, but I believe Greenore 8 yo is the only one that the LCBO carries in Ontario (currently listed, but no inventory showing...hopefully it is brought back).

@MCM Agreed on the Mellow Corn. The other suggestion for Greenore is also a good selection. The 8 year is ok but the 18 year is very good.

@Pudge72 - Century 21 Reserve and Century 15-25 are both single grain whiskies (100% corn). I know the LCBO currently has the 15-25 in stock.

Don't much like Greenore 8 yo, but the Greenore 15 yo I find outstanding. If you are including US whiskeys, by all means try Balcones True Blue (Corn Whiskey). By "Single Grain" I surmise that you are speaking of corn whisk(e)y only, and not some other grain like rye. I like plenty of 100% rye whiskies...but rye doesn't really exist as "grain" in UK-WhiskySpeak.

@YakLord - the Century 15/25 is outstanding, a favorite of mine - and a bargain - currently packaged in a glossy red carton to protect the unique and attractive bottle.. Century 21 and the Stampede 100th anniversary are pure corn, but I'm not convinced that 15/25 is 100% corn whisky?

@paddockjudge - you may be right...both Chip Dykstra and Davin clearly mention that the Century 21 is a 100% corn whisky, but aren't as clear in their reviews of the 15-25; Davin refers to the 15-25 as a 'long aged corn whisky', but doesn't say whether it is 100% corn...maybe it isn't, but the impression I get from his review is that it might be, and Chip does mention in a comment on this review: aspiringgentleman.com/scotch/… , that the 15-25 is 100% corn.

@YakLord - thank you for the link.
Chip Dykstra said "The bottling is a 100 % corn based mash ‘bottled in bond’ under the supervision of the Canadian Government. I believe it is the only 100% Single grain Corn whisky in Canada."
This is the first reference I have seen confirming 15/25 as single grain. I am now convinced. I had assumed it was 100% corn until recently when I was explaining the "Canadian Rye Whisky" tag to my nephew (and couldn't provide proof that it was pure corn).
The three Highwood bottlings; Century 21, Century 15/25, and Stampede 100th anniversary are essentially from the same lot of whisky.

@paddockjudge - I agree, the 'Canadian Rye Whisky' concept can confuse people, especially when you're dealing with a whisky that doesn't actually contain any rye...

The Nikka 2000 Coffey Grain, at a whopping 60+% abv is nonetheless smooth and dangerously drinkable. A bit of warning, beware of the recently-released diluted Nikka Single grain.

Bumping this topic back up from months ago (as I've been away for a while), I went to Whisky Live London this past weekend and really enjoyed the Teeling single grain whisky, the main expression was so nice to drink, and it had a finish which just tasted so different & unique. Clearly I wasnt the only one to think so as the TWE shop had sold out when I went to buy one, so i resigned myself to purchasing the equally enjoyable small batch instead. I've tried grain whiskey before, but this was something this little bit special in my eyes.

Thanks for reviving this, @Alanjp! While I haven't tried it yet, I do have a bottle of the new Collingwood 21 year-old (a Canadian whisky) that is made from 100% malted rye, and I had the opportunity to try the Bain's Cape Mountain Single Grain, which is 100% corn (maize), although the Brand Rep at the whisky festival where I tried it insisted that it was 100% rye...as @talexander has noted, it isn't rye...it is definitely corn, and a fantastic whisky.

Well, has anyone else tried this single grain whisky - Collingwood 21 Year Old Rye Canadian Whisky?
From the press release (Nov. 7, 2013):
"21 years ago, a small unnamed batch of malted rye whisky identified only as lot 41-06-91 was crafted at the distillery in Collingwood, Ontario. This whisky has now become Collingwood Rye 21-Year-Old which has been fermented and distilled from a unique recipe of 100 percent malted rye and pure spring water from Ontario's Georgian Bay. Collingwood Rye 21-Year-Old has matured for 21 years in seasoned oak barrels and in its finishing step, this unique Canadian whisky rests with toasted Maplewood to complete its smooth character."

For a review by Davin de Kergommeaux, see this link: canadianwhisky.org/reviews/…
Aged 21 years makes this one very smooth! Rye bread, rye spice (hot and peppery, but not overpowering considering it is 100% malted rye)
Currently in stock in the LCBO - C$56.95. Also available in 16 U.S. states (see the links for states). Saw it online at Binny's in Illinois for US$59.99.

Have only had the Compass Box Hedonism before.
A very unique whisky and somewhat reminds of the Ealanta but more bourbony, with a brighter, fresher and more vibrant quality.

Really enjoying some of the points coming up in the blends discussion but it got me thinking, ever tried any really good single grain whiskies?
