Pardon the riff, I couldn't resist. I'm sitting on the front steps of my cottage in Lagavulin, Islay, UK. Just got back from Laphroaig with the minis they hand out to visitors. I'll salute you all as I drink my Lapgroaig cask strength while gazing upon the Lagavulin distillery.

Laphroaig on Tuesday. Nice tour. I tried the new Triple Wood whisk is a Quarter Cask with additional time in a sherry cask. Quite good. Then Lagavulin with the extended tasting yesterday. I got to pull spirit right from the cask, 14 year old. Today was Ardbeg, surprisingly small facility. The real bonus was the post tour tasting. We tried Blasda, 10 yo, Coryveckren, Ugidial, Alligator and Rollercoaster! (I'm not spellchecking) plus two mini's for walking over. Tomorrow is Bruichladdich, Bunnahabhain and Kilchoman. So many whiskies on such a small island.

@Wodha: a couple of weeks ago I was drinking exactly where you are drinking now. The weather was crap, but the whisky was great. Make sure you have lunch at the Old Kiln House Cafe at Ardbeg before you leave the island. Their smoked mackeral soup is killer. Where are you staying on Islay. We had trouble finding a decent B&B in Port Ellen, and ther wasn't much in the way of decent eateries. We might stay in Bowmore next time, it looked like there was a lot more going on. What did you think of the Alligator, by the way?

Cheers.

@Wodha: Oops, I just reread and see that you stayed in Lagavulin. Can you give a good recommendation for the cottage?

@Wodha, did you wear that Ardbeg cap into the Laphroaig and Lagavulin distilleries?

I am just starting a flight of five Balvenies. First, 21 yo Portwood. Excellent whisky. To follow: 14 yo Caribbean Cask, 12 yo Doublewood, 10 yo Founders Reserve, and 15 yo Single Barrel. It is a lazy and contented Saturday!

I am really envious! At the moment, it is 4am on Sunday, Nov27. Couldn't sleep, so I got up and having a go at this great whisky forum! The true test of a great whisky: getting up at 4am and, after drinking the whisky the night before, having another small dram. The Laphroaig Quarter Cask is the most drinkable at any time whisky I have ever had. Recently, I have enjoyed the Ardbeg 10, Laphroaig 10 and the Bowmore 12, and also various other malts not from Islay. Here I can only get Laphroaig 10 year and Quarter Cask. I guess I should feel fortunate that I can get the Quarter Cask. The other one I would love to try at some time, is the 10 year Cask Strength. But the QC is so smooth, full bodied and well balanced with just the right amount of sweetness, I can't imagine it gets any better. Other than enjoying some tastings on the Island of Islay! Cheers, Carl

Today I picked up a bottle of Bookers Bourbon to compliment the abundah for my wife. I'm quite enjoying it as is my wife. The quality seems well above its price point for sure.
