Whivie – Whisky Voor Iedereen, which is Dutch for ‘whisky is for everyone’ – is my personal whisky blog and it celebrates its 10th anniversary. Obviously this is something I cannot let pass without celebration. So together with my friend Niek and Ilse, I searched for a nice whisky to conclude the first decade with. A good single malt would be the obvious choice, but then this sherry cask came our way. It was filled – in 1993 – with not one, but two single malt spirits. Blended at birth, as they say. And while we are not at liberty to tell you which one, we can reveal that both are very good Speysiders. One from a distillery founded in 1824, the other founded in 1978 by someone who worked at the former. I’m sure the Sherlock in your will figure it out. The cask matured for a quarter century before Whivie was allowed to draw 100 bottles from it.

Beautifully layered nose on dark fruit in a stew. Plums and raisins, chocolate and coffee, hazelnuts in caramel, nougat and butterscotch, mocha and sniffing tobacco. Nicely seasoned with nutmeg and some black pepper, eucalyptus and camphor. Very seductive.

Spicy and honeysweet arrival. The dark fruit marmalade is joined by a bitter note from both the toasted oak and some Seville oranges, while honey softens up the whole. A candy-like hint of cinnamon appears, as does some liquorice. Fine balance.

The finish is very long, heartwarming and feisty. Liquid candy.

It goes without saying that we are pretty proud of this release. It’s a heavenly blended malt. It will be available as of 28th October 2019, ten years to the day of the launch of our blog. Slàinte!
