The Tenné from the Speyside Distillery is een Speyside (doh!) whisky that first matured for 8 years on ex-bourbon casks before receiving a 6 month finish is port cask, which explains its salmon pink color. Tenné is Gaelic for ‘tawny’, referring to the red/brown hue of the port wine. The port casks come from the Quinto do Filoco bodega, a family run enterprise from Tabuoçuo in Portugal, about 60 kilometers to the east of the capital Porto.
The nose is young, honeysweet and candy-like. I get hints of banana, milk chocolate and strawberries, but also Pink Lady apples and sweet, juicy pears. It smells so sweet that I am reminded more of candy than of fruit.
The body is very light, unfortunately. Again honeysweet and candy-like, giving me the impression that I am not tasting a whisky, but more something of a strawberry liqueur. With some spices in the mix. Think a soft pepper and some cloves.
The finish is medium long and… still very sweet.
This might be something nice to mix and serve at a party, but I would not dare put this on the table as a single malt. Around 40 EUR.
